historical notes Lewisohn was a German born collector, patron of the arts, investment broker and philanthropist who moved to the United States ca. 1867. He was president of Adolph Lewisohn & Son (Lewisohn Brothers), Tennessee Copper and Chemical Corporation, General Development Company, Miami Copper Company, and the South American Gold and Platinum Company.

Lewisohn collected paintings, antiquities, decorative arts, manuscripts and rare books. Although Lewisohn is known for his extensive collection of Impressionist art, he began collecting work from the Barbizon School in 1885.

Lewisohn gave artwork to the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the collection was known as the “Adolph Lewisohn Gift Collection,” and included “The Awakening” by Maurice Stern, “Selina,” a bust by Jacob Epstein and “Eve and the Apple,” by the Danish artist, Kaj Neilsen.

Lewisohn's son, Samuel was also an art collector and assisted him in making purchases. His daughter, Adele L Lewisohn, married Arthur Lehman (1901-1936), of the Lehman brother family.
