historical notes Abby Aldrich Rockefeller was an art collector (Modern and Japanese art), patron, and one of three founders of the Museum of Modern Art.

Daughter of the Rhode Island senator, Nelson W. Aldrich, in 1901, she married to John D. Rockefeller, Jr. (1874-1960), son of the founder of Standard Oil Company, who was then a sophomore at Brown University.

Rockefeller gave her collection of modern art, including 1,600 prints, to the Museum of Modern Art. She left a collection of 700 bird-and-flower Japanese prints to the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, where here sister, Lucy Aldrich’s collection of Asian textiles is also housed.

Abby gave an additional 106 Japanese prints to the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 1946.
