historical notes John Claflin Southwick was a leather merchant and art collector who commissioned G A Baker to do portraits of his family. The Baker portraits are now in the Brooklyn Museum of Art.

Southwick was a member of the Union League, the New-England Society and Shoe and Leather Clubs.
