Speyer's wife, nee Leonora von Stosch (1872-1956), was a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet.
Speyer’s collection included Majolica jars, third century Greek marble statuary, Swiss Gothic and Burgundian tapestries, sixteenth century bronzes, work by English, Flemish, Italian old and modern masters, including, among others, work by Roger van der Weyden, John Singer Sargent, and Danese Cattaneo.
Speyer’s brother James Speyer was also an art collector and their family had been in banking since the sixteenth century.
