Baker, George F. (George Fisher), 1840-1931 print view role Collector dates 1840-1931 city New York City state NY other cities Tuxedo, NY; sex M historical notes George Fisher Baker, aka the "dean of American banking" and "grand old man of Wall Street," was a banker (founder of the First National Bank), art collector, philanthropist, and Trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Baker's art collection included, among other items, Tabriz sixteenthcentury, Isapahan, and Persian carpets; Beauvais tapestries; bronze sculptures by Rodin; paneling; and twenty paintings by, among others, Daubigny, Corot, Cuyp, Rousseau, Troyon, and Dagnan.
