Collector of French antiques, thoroughbred breeder, and a former chairman of the family-owned Bessemer Trust Company.
Among the items auctioned from his estate by Sotheby's, October, 2002, were a rare Régence desk with ormolu mounts by Noël Gérard, a Louis XVI parquetry commode signed by Pierre-Harry Mewesen, a group of Louis XV giltwood fauteuils by Jacques-Jean-Baptiste Tilliard, and a pair of Louis XVI marquetry bookcases signed by Nicolas Petit.
His art collection had works by Claude Monet and John Singer Sargent.
