Donald E. Johnson was a journalist and newspaperman (Flint Journal and The Flint news Advosor). With his wife, Alice, he collected Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art. Their collection included, among others, work by Camille Pissarro, Henri Matisse, and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot.
The Johnsons served as trustees of The Flint Art Institute and assisted the institute in augmenting its collection through the Whiting Foundation, a charitable trust they established in 1954. Through the Whiting Foundation the Institute was able to add paintings and works on paper by, among others, Childe Hassam, Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Mary Cassatt, Gustave Courbet, Rembrandt van Rijn, Edgar Degas, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
The Johnsons had three children: Alice Heaton, Donald Johnson Jr. (1932–2013), and Linda LeMieux.
