A cellist, art collector and benefactor of the Pierpont Morgan Library. He was married to the former Helen Marshall Schelling.
Scholz collected old master drawings, 1350-1800. He donated 1,500 Italian drawings to the Pierpont Morgan Library in 1973. They included drawings by drawings by Pisanello, Veronese, Titian, Guercino, and Piranesi.
Scholz also collected photographs and donated his collection of nearly 5,000 photographs to the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame.
