Criminal lawyer and art collector. His collection consisted of modern American paintings, drawings and sculpture.
He began collecting in 1955 with a painting by Maurice Prendergast.
Steinberg's collection reflected the work of the New York School, with work by Jackson Pollock, Mark Tobey, Louise Nevelson, Adolph Gottlieb, Sam Francis, Willem de Kooning, Alexander Calder, Richard Linder, Larry Rivers, John Sloan, Reginald Marsh, Milton Avery, Ben Shahn, John Marin, Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Archile Gorky among others.
His collection of 100 paintings by 57 artists was sold in 1970 by Parke-Bernet.
