historical notes James “Jim” E. Wenneker is an art collector, businessman (Wenneker Shoe Stores, J & B Properties, Wenneker Management Co, Swiss Colony gourmet food stores), philanthropist and emeritus member of the Art Museum at University of Kentucky's advisory.

He and his wife, Irene Wenneker (d. 2003), while drawn to 17th century Dutch landscape paintings ended up building a collection of 19th century French oil paintings, watercolors and drawings. The couple shared their collection by donating works of art to the University of Kentucky.

The collection included work by Jules-Adolphe Goupil, Étienne-Prosper Berne-Bellecour, Rosa Bonheur, Gustave Doré, Jean-Baptiste-Édouard Detaille, Jehan Georges Vibert and many others.
