Abby Weed Grey was an art collector, patron, curator, and founder of the Grey Art Gallery & Study Center at New York University.
Through her travels, Grey collected modern art of non-Western cultures. Grey's collection included work from, among other places, Japan, Thailand, India, Kashmir, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, and Israel.
Her holdings were rich in art from Iran, representing 200 out of 700 works of art total, and included work by Parviz Tanavoli, Hossein Zenderoudi, and Faramarz Pilaram.
In 1930, Abbey Weed Grey married a career army officer, Benjamin Edwards Grey, who died in 1956. After the death of her husband, Grey established the annual Benjamin Edwards Grey Memorial Lecture in poetry as part of the Summer Writers' Conference at the University of Utah, and in 1961 she launched The Ben & Abbey Grey Foundation, Inc.
Grey served on the Board of Trustees of The Minnesota Society of Fine Arts from 1967-1973 and on the Minneapolis College of Art and Design's Board of Overseers from 1964-1983. She established the Abby Weed Grey scholarships at the College as well.
Grey endowed the Grey Fellowship in Museum Studies at the Walker Art Center she endowed the Grey Fellowship in Museum Studies. She was a member of The Women's Club of Minneapolis and The Cosmopolitan Club of New York. |
