Together with his wife, Muriel Mallin Berman (1924-2004, m. 1942), he formed an art collection which included world War II American art, twentieth century European and American sculpture, African art, Eastern European art, South American art, Japanese prints, and works by Israeli artists. The collection included work by, among others, Rembrandt, Mary Cassatt, Henry Moore, Lynn Chadwick, George M. Harding, Benjamin West, Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Francoise Gilot, Albert Jean Adolphe, Marc Chagall, and Robert Rauschenberg.

The Bermans established the Philip and Muriel Berman Center for Jewish Studies at Lehigh University, and the Center for Biblical Archaeology at Hebrew University.
