Collector, businessman, and vice chairman of Humana Inc., and Broadway producer. He was married to the former the former Dorothy O'Connell.
He was a pivotal figure in raising $13.5 million to build the Kentucky Center for the Arts, which was completed in 1983, and served as its board chairman from 1980 to 1987.
Mr. Cherry's interest in art resulted in what some critics have called the greatest collection of 20th century sculpture being placed in Humana's headquarters and the neighboring Kentucky Center for the Arts.
Included are Henry Moore's "Reclining Figure," Alberto Giacometti's "Large Standing Woman II" and Alexander Calder's "The Red Feather."
At a Manhattan auction in 1981, Mr. Cherry outbid other collectors and paid $5.3 million for the Picasso self-portrait "Yo," at the time the highest price ever paid for a work by the artist (New York Times, July 18, 1991).
