After receiving a degree from the University of Warsaw in 1934 and his doctorate in 1936 from the Universitas Joseph Pilsudski Varsovienis, Eilenberg went to England before immigrating to the United States in 1939. In 1947, Eilenberg, after appointments at other universities, accepted an appointment in the Mathematics Department at Columbia University and served as its chairman from 1960-1963 and 1982-1983. In addition to his work at Columbia, Eilenberg was a collector of Indian and East Asian Art.
