John Howard Whittemore was an art collector, philanthropist, and businessman (Iron and Railroad). Whittemore was a partner of A. A. Pope (1844-1913) in the National Malleable Castings Company in Cleveland, Ohio; and, owner of the Eastern Company Foundry on Bridge Street. He served as Director of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad Company.
Whittemore’s collection included work by, among others, J. A. M. Whistler, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, and Claude Monet.
Whittemore married Julia Anna Spencer (1839-1915) in 1863, and the couple had six children, two survived childhood: a son, Harris Whittemore (1864-1927), also an art collector; and a daughter, Gertrude Buckingham Whittemore (1875- 1941). Gertrude inherited the life interest in the Whistler painting, Symphony in White, No. I: The White Girl, the painting entered the National Gallery of Art’s collecting in 1943.
