historical notes

Art collector and widow of Robert Garrett, banker and president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
Her second husband was Dr. Henry Barton Jacobs (1852-1939).
In 1934 Mrs. Jacobs offered her art collection to the BMA under several conditions, one of which was that Pope design the wing in which it would hang, and the board agreed.
Jacob's collection consisted of paintings, tapestries, miniatures, porcelains, jades and other art objects. The collection included work by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Perugino, van Rujsdeal, Romney, Greuze, Murillo, Charles Wilson Peale and Thomas Scully.
