Collector, painter, printmaker, teacher, and curator. Kainen and his wife, Ruth, collected German Expressionist Prints.
Mr. Kainen's first marriage, to Bertha Friedman, ended in divorce. At the time of Kainen's death, in addition to his wife Ruth, he was survived by two sons from his first marriage, Daniel, of New York, and Paul, of Washington.
