In 1781, he married Margaret Russell, the daughter of the Honorable James and Katherine Graves Russell. Codman was a charter member of the Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture (1792), the Society for the Information and Advice of Immigrants (1793), and the Boston Chamber of Commerce (1794).
