Leavitt and his wife Sophie were collectors of contemporary art. Represented in the Leavitt collection were artists like de Kooning, Giacometti, Lichtenstein, Cindy Sherman, Richard Diebenkorn, Andy Warhol, Pollack, and Alexander Calder. The Leavitts donated and lent works to institutions like the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Norton Museum in Palm Beach.

Leavitt owned Willem de Kooning's 1949 ''Woman,'' which sold at Christie, Manson & Woods International Inc., NY, for $15.6 million in 1996.

Mr. Leavitt also contributed to educational institutions and charities, including the United Jewish Appeal and New York Law School, which awarded him an honorary doctorate of laws.
