historical notes Gifford Phillips was a writer, publisher (Frontier Magazine and The Nation), real estate developer (Pardee Phillips), an art collector and the nephew of the collector Duncan Phillips (1886–1966), of the Phillips Collection in Washington, D. C.

Together with his wife, Joann G. Kocher Phillips (ca. 1929–), he formed an art collection which included work by, among others, Richard Diebenkorn, Henri Matisse, Willem d Kooning, Channing Peake, Helen Frankenthaler, Pablo Picasso, Robert Motherwell, Milton Avery, Henry Moore, Claire Falkenstien, Oscar Kokoschka, Arshile Gorky, Emerson Woelffer, Ad Reinhardt, and Lee Mullican. He and his wife were also involved in the preservation of Pueblo Indian art.

The Gifford and Joann Phillips collection was exhibited at the UCLA Art Galleries from November 4–December 9, 1962.

Phillips served as trustee of the Phillips Collection, the Museum of Modern Art, the Pasadena Art Museum (served as president 1970–1974), a founding Chairman of the Contemporary Art Council at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and a member of the Mark Rothko Foundation.
