A champion tennis player, Adele Lewisohn Lehman was an art collector, artist, and philanthropist. Adele married Arthur Lehman, of the firm Lehman Brothers, in 1901.
Lehman and her husband, Arthur Lehman (1873-1936), collected paintings, decorative arts, bronzes, ceramics, and tapestries from the 14th to 20th centuries.
In addition to the Italian primitives, the Lehman’s collected work by, among others, Henry Raeburn, Jean Baptiste Greuze, Francesco Guardi, Corneille de Lyon, Claude Lorrain, Gustave Courbet, Jan Van Goyen, Aert Van Der Neer, Albert Cuyp, Jacob Isaaksz Van Ruisdael, and Thomas Lawrence.
After the death of her husband Lehman purchased art by, among others, Van Gogh, Rousseau, Gaugain, Renoir, Eugene Boudin, Odilon Redon, George Seurat, Paul Signac, Eduard Vuillard, Matisse, Derain, Whistler, Childe Hassam, and Degas.
Lehman left twenty-four works of art to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and seven to the Fogg Museum.
The Lehmans had three children: Dorothy (1904-1969, Mrs. Richard J Bernhard), Helen (1905-1989, Mrs. Benjamin J. Buttenwieser), and Frances (1906-1996, Mrs. John L. Loeb).
