historical notes William Woodward was a lawyer, banker and horseman. He was the heir of James T Woodward and his inheritance included homes and the Belair stud farm in Maryland.

Woodward’s widow, the philanthropist Elsie Ogden Cryder Woodward (1882-1981), donated much of his art collection and a good portion of funds towards the creation of the Woodward Wing at the Baltimore Art Museum.
