historical notes Edward W. Carter was an American businessman, philanthropist and art collector. He served as the president of Broadway Stores and chair of the University of California Board of Regents, and was the owner of the Hannah Carter Japanese Garden. Carter was one of the co-founders of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and the Los Angeles Music Center. A world-renowned collector of Dutch Golden Age paintings, which were exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s “A Mirror of Nature: Dutch Paintings from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Edward William Carter” in 1982. He donated fifty of these Dutch canvases to LACMA. He also donated the Hannah Carter Japanese Garden to his alma mater, UCLA.
