A collector of Americana, John Hill Morgan was an assistant professor and curator of American painting at Yale University, former State legislator (Kings County, 1899-1903), trustee of Brooklyn Savings Bank (1910-1936), director of the Bank of America (1925-1932), and lawyer (retired 1936).
He was married to the former Lelia A. Myers. Morgan collected early American portraits and miniatures. Morgan was an authority on portraits of George Washington. He was a member of the American Antiquarian Society, Union Club and The Brook, both of New York, and the Wolf's Head, Elizabethan Club.
