historical notes American painter and collector, 1873-1953, Bartlett was married three times; first to Dora Tripp (1879–1917) in 1898, second to Helen Louise Birch (1884–1925), in 1919, and finally Evelyn Fortune Bartlett (1888–1997), in 1931.

He and his second wife, Helen Birch Bartlett, collected French Post-Impressionist and modernist art.. In 1926, Bartlett gave The Art Institute of Chicago a collection of Post-Impressionist paintings in memory of his second wife and collecting companion Helen Birch Bartlett.

The Bartlett's collection included work by Cezanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Matisse, Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Seurat. Other modern European artists included Vlaminck, Dufy, Herbin, Foujita, de la Fresnaye, Valadon, Dufresne, Marcoussis, Severini, and Pascin, Lotiron, Beaudin, Waroquier, Pruna, and Marmorek.. Among the few Americans represented in the collection were John Mann and Charles Demuth.

Bartlett served on the Museum of Modern Art's board of directors as a trustee from 1929 to 1935, when he was elected an honorary trustee.

Bartlett’s New York clubs included The Century, National Arts Club, and Coffee House. In Chicago Barlett’s clubs were Racquet, University, Cliff Dwellers, and Casino.
