historical notes
|
Jacob-Baart de la Faille was an art critic, lawyer, scholar, and expert on the work of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890).
Faille compiled a van Gogh catalogue raisonné, L'Oeuvre de Vincent van Gogh, which was published in 1928. Shortly after the publication, he was involved in an authentication scandal which included the German art dealer Otto Wacker, 1898-1970. Faille had authenticated some 30 paintings associated with Wacker as being genuine van Goghs; he later reversed his opinion in both the press and publication Les faux van Gogh (The Fake Van Goghs, published in 1930).
