historical notes Mortimer Loeb Schiff was a collector, philanthropist, financier, partner in the financial firm of Kuhn, Loeb & Co. (1900-1931), and Boy Scouts of America (BSA) leader.

Schiff collected paintings, drawings, prints, tapestries, sculptures, decorative arts, majolica, and books.

Schiff’s collection sold at an auction held by Christie’s, London in 1938. The sale included Flemish, early German and French paintings, English mezzotints, sketches and water colors by Watteau, Boucher, Fragonard; Gothic, Gobelin and Beauvais tapestries; Louis XIV carpets, Louis XV gueridons, Louis XVI marquetry and console tables; della Robbia terra cottas, Sevres porcelain, Limoges enamels, Ispahan rugs, Italian crystal and marbles, bronzes, Oriental rugs, precious saltcellars, marriage coffers, inkstands, candlesticks.

Schiff was vice president of the Chamber of Commerce of the State of New York, trustee of the Provident Loan Society of New York, the New York Foundation, the Baron de Hirsch Fund, the New York Botanical Garden, president of the Jewish Board of Guardians of New York, and vice president and director of the Chattel Loan Society of New York.

He was the director of Chemical Bank and Trust Company of New York, Western Union Telegraph Company, American Railway Express Company, Wells Fargo Company, Pacific Oil Company, United States Safe Deposit Company, New York Foundation, United States Mortgage and Trust Company, Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad, and the American and Continental Corporation.

A yachtsman Schiff’s clubs included the Beta Theta Pi of the New York Yacht Club, Republican Club, City Club, St. Andrew’s Gold Club and a charter member of the Piping Rock Club.

Schiff married Miss Adele Neustadt on April 30, 1901.
