His interest in collecting dates to his teens, when his stepmother, the Oscar-winning actress Claire Trevor, brought him a signed Matisse poster from a trip to Europe. She also introduced Bren to many artists in the New York School of Abstract Expressionists. Bren’s rarely-seen collection of art hangs on the walls of his homes and at the Irvine Co. headquarters.
