Daughter of a governor of Georgia, Edward Telfair (1737–1807), Mary Telfair’s inherited wealth afforded her philanthropies, world travel and art collections.
Telfair left her home, art collections, and the remainder of her inheritance to establish the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences.
