historical notes George Clifford Thomas was a banker, partner of Jay Cooke, later of Drexel & Co., philanthropist and collector of art, rare books and manuscripts.

Among others Thomas' collection included work by Eugène Delacroix, Sir Joshua Reynold, James McNeil Whistler, Jean Francois Millet, John Constable, Zamacois, Rousseau, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Jules Breton, Daubigny, Antoine Mauve, Gerald Dou, Fortuny, Rosa Bonheur, Jean Baptiste Edouard Detaille, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Moran, William T. Richards, Rembrandt Peale, Peter de Haas, William T. Richards, Meyer Von Bremen, Gilbert Stuart, George Innes, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Jean-Léon Gerome, Alma-Tadema, and Joseph Israel.

Thomas was a member of the Union League, Art, Corinthian Yacht, Merion Cricket, Germantown Cricket, Philadelphia Country, Racquet and Church Clubs.
