One of the first women elected to the board of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of art, a prominent figure in many civic and charitable activities, and an art collector.
Miss Mary Crocker Alexander Whitehouse was a collector of paintings and French decorative art. She married the diplomat Sheldon Whitehouse (1883-1965) in 1920. She and her husband were posted in were posted in diplomatic service to France, Spain, Turkey, Guatemala and Colombia.
