historical notes Charles E. West was an art collector, scholar and educator (Brooklyn Heights Female Seminary and Buffalo Female Academy).

West was a Fellow of the Royal Antiquarian Society and was a member of the American Ethnological, American Philological, The New York Historical Society, American Numismatic and Archaeological Society and a founding member of the Long Island Historical Society (later known as the Brooklyn Historical Society in Brooklyn Heights).

West collected prints, coin, books and Japanese, Grecian, Roman, Egyptian and Peruvian antiquities.
