historical notes Clarence Buckingham was an art collector, trustee and former director of the Art Institute of Chicago, and businessman (banking and real estate) associated with the firm J. H. Wrenn & Co., Central Elevator Co. (AKA J. & E. Buckingham company), and the director in the Illinois Trust and Savings Bank.

Buckingham's collection included work by, among others, Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, Martin Schongauer, Lucas Van Leyden, Anthony Van Dyck, Adrian Van Ostade, James A. McNeill Whistler, Charles Meryon, Sir Francis Seymour Haden, J. M. W. Turner, Charles Jacques, J. L. E. Meissonier, J. L . Gerôme, Hiroshige and other ukiyo-e artists.
