historical notes Grant Hill is a retired NBA basketball player, art collector, and co-owner of the Atlanta Hawks. Hill's parents’ collection inspired him to build his own. He has acquired some 120 pieces of art, most of which are centered around Black life in the twentieth century. Hill and his wife, Tamia, sponsored a three-year, seven-city tour of his personal art collection titled "Something All Our Own: The Grant Hill Collection of African American Art." Featuring a large collection of Black artists, including the works of celebrated masters Romare Bearden and Elizabeth Catlett, as well as the work of artists including Hughie Lee-Smith, John Biggers, Phoebe Beasely, Malcolm Brown, Edward Jackson, John Coleman and Arthello Beck, Jr., the exhibition aimed to highlight the importance of African American art and inspire young people to explore creative avenues beyond sports and entertainment. Grant also established the "Something All Our Own Scholarship" to provide educational assistance to college students interested in pursuing a degree in visual arts.
