historical notes In addition to being an art collector, Mansfield,was a lawyer and a director of banking, insurance and other business organizations in Connecticut and New York.

Mansfield collected mainly nineteenth-century American painting and his collection included work by Winslow Homer, George Inness, J. Francis Murphy, Childe Hassam, Sarget, Twachtman, Dainferfield, Whistler, Thomas W. Dewing, Mecalf, Ranger, Arthur B. Davies, Bruce Crane and Blakelock.

Mansfield's brother, Howard, was also an art collector. He was twice first, to Elizabeth H. Barney (d. 1887) and secondly, to the former Miss Ann Rosalie Mix (d. 1930).
