historical notes Edith Clowes, née Edith Edith Whitehill Hinkel, was an art collector, philanthropist –active in educational, cultural and social service interests. In Indianapolis, she was a co-founder of the Orchard School and Planned Parenthood.

Clowes and her husband, George Henry Alexander Clowes (1877–1958), amassed an art collection which included primarily paintings by European Old Masters.

The collection included work by, or attributed to, among others, Jean-Antoine Watteau (French, 1684-1721), Corneille de Lyon (Netherlandish, 1500-1575), Workshop of El Greco (Greek, 1541-1614), Master of Badia a Isola (Italian), After Hans Holbein the younger (German, 1497-1543), Pere Vall (Spanish, 1380-1480), Bicci di Lorenzo (Italian, 1373-1452), Joshua Reynolds (British, 1723-1792), John Constable (British, 1776-1837), Follower of Fra Angelico (Italian, 1390-1455), Hubert Robert (French, 1733-1808),Ambrosius Bosschaert the younger (Dutch, 1609-1645), and Jan Brueghel the Elder (Flemish, 1568-1625).

The collection originally hung in their home, Westerley, then after the death of Dr. Clowes, it became property of the Clowes foundation. Clowes continued to collect after the death of her husband.

In 1971, the foundation moved the collection to a new building, Clowes Pavilion, at the Indianapolis Museum of Art (IMA). In 1999, the directors of foundation donated the entire collection to the museum—the move would take place over a number of years before completed.
