historical notes Katharine Ordway, heiress to the 3M fortune, was an ecologist, land conservationist, philanthropist and art collector who donated her collection, with an endowment, to Yale University in 1980.

Ordway collected work from America (North, South, and Central), Europe, and Asia.

Her collection included work by, among others, Picasso, Brancusi, Calder, Pollock, Rothko, Gorky, Bonnard, Vuillard, Gris, Rouault, Rousseau, Renoir, de Kooning, Rufino Tamayo, Chinese art from the Ming and Ching dynasty’s, as well as work from 17th, 18th and 19th centuries Japan, India, Peru, Australia and Africa.
