An Irish immigrant, Alexander Turney Stewart was an art collector, merchant and department store owner.
He and his wife, nee Cornelia Mitchell Clinch (daughter of Susannah Banker and Jacob Clinch, director of the New York Customs House) collected art together.
According to The Art Treasures of America, Mrs. A. T. Stewart owned "The Appian Way in the Time of Augustus" by G. R. C. Boulanger, "The Prodigal Son" by Edward Dubuffe, I. Leon Y Escosura's "Haddon Hall" and "In the Library," "A Collaboration" by Jean Léon Gérôme, "Benedick and Beatrice" by Hugues Merle, "Circus Maximus" by Jean Léon Gérôme, Meyer von Bremen's "The Good Little Sisters," "The Serious Book" by A. Toulmouche, and works by Hugues Merle, C. Baugniet.
The Stewarts lent work to The Universal Exhibition held in Paris, 1867 and their collection was sold in 1887.
