historical notes John David Wolfe was a president of the American Museum of Natural History, hardware merchant, and real estate investor.

While Wolfe owned some works of art his daughter, Catharine Lorillard Wolfe, was the art collector in the family amassing most of her collection after his death.

Wolfe gifted the Library of Buckingham Smith to the New York Historical Society.
