historical notes Clement Greenberg was an art collector, critic and author.

Greenberg owned work by Helen Frankenthaler, Friedel Dzubas, Kenneth Noland, Jackson Pollock, Morris Louis, Wolfgang Hollegha, Ina Meares, Barnett Newman, Robert Jacobsen, David Smith, Kenneth Noland, Julues Olitski, Robert Motherwell, Milton Avery, Arnold Friedman, Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, Paul Granlund, Sidney Laufman, Edwin Dickinson, Edward Hopper, Andrew Wyeth, John Chumly, Lennart Anderson, and Goodridge Roberts.

His non-western collection included an African totem staff, small archaic Chinese bronze of the Chou dynasty, and an Egyptian terra-cotta figure of the sixth dynasty.

Greenberg gave works by Frankenthaler, Dzubas and Noland to his Alma mater, Syracuse University (http://suart.syr.edu/collections/donor_collections.html).

With funds provided by Tom and Gretchen Holce of Portland, The Portland Art Museum purchased the Clement Greenberg Collection from his widow, Janice van Horn. The collection consisted of 159 paintings, prints, drawings, and sculpture by American artists of the mid-20th century including work by Kenneth Noland, Helen Frankenthaler, Jules Olitski, Sir Anthony Caro, Jackson Pollock, Hans Hofmann, David Smith, Friedel Dzubas, Walter Darby Bannard, Darryl Hughto, Larry Poons, and others.

Additionally Ms. van Horn donated Greenberg’s annotated library of exhibition catalogues and publications on artists in his collection.
