Clendenin J. Ryan was the son of the financier Thomas Fortune Ryan (1851-1928), art collector, horse and businessman.
Ryan collected decorative arts, prints, Italian 16th c. bronzes, French 19th c. and American 20th c. sculpture, and French (15th and 16th c.), Italian (15th, 16th, 18th c.), British (18th c.) paintings and included work by Andrea Solario (Milanese artist, c. 1450-1522), master of the Burgundian School of the early 15th C., Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, John Hoppner, Filippo Mazzoloa (Venetian, 1460-1505), Sir Henry Raeburn, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Rodin, and Harriet W. Frishmuth.
He also had a collection of prints which included work by Anthony Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Charles Meryon, Martin Schongauer, Albrecht Durer and Zorn.
In January of 1940, Parke-Bernet Galleries, Inc, NY, NY sold Ryan’s prints ($156,205.00), paintings ($152,000.00) and library ($11,632.00) collections.
