historical notes Brooklynite Reverend Henry Ward Beecher (brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe) was and preacher, political figure, abolitionist and art collector.

Beecher's art collection included work by George Innes, Whitredge, C. W. Conant, George L. Brown, Aaron Draper Shattuck, Thomas Prichard Rossiter, Jervis McEntee, Henry Inman, Eastman Johnson, Henry Inman, Van Beest, C. E. Frere, Albert Bierstadt, Victor Nehlig, Louis Lang, A. W. Warren, William Hart, G.H. Hall, Samuel Coleman, N. V. Diaz, and Jean Baptiste Roble.

Messrs. Ives & Co sold a portion of Beecher’s collecting in an 1863 auction at the Derby Gallery. In 1887, the American Art Association sold Beecher's library, paintings, bric-a-brac, engravings, and porcelains at a sale totaling $31,738.76.
