William Hood Stewart was Philadelphian merchant (West Indies sugar baron) and art collector.
Stewart was an patron of the Barbizon artists and although he favored work by Mariano Fortuny i Marsal his collection included work by A,Vollon, F V L Roybert, Troyon, E. Zamacois, E. Van Marke, G. Boldini, H H Moore, A Stevens, M. Rico, and others.
Stewart's collection was auctioned off by the American Art Galleries at Chickering Hall on Feb. 3 and 4, 1898. Seventy of the 128 water colors, drawings and oils were sold for a total of $133,190.
