historical notes David H King (Jr.) was an art collector, contractor (real estate developer: Madison Square Garden, Mills Building, Washington Arch, Equitable building, Strivers Row, Hotel Renaissance), hotelier, and president of New York City’s Park Commission and the New York Dock Company.

Among others, King’s collection featured work from the French, English, Dutch and Flemish Schools.

Artists represented in King’s collection and his February 18th and 19th 1896 auction (American Art Association, Chickering Hall) include, among others, Sir William Beechey, Jean Beraud, R. Berne-Bellecour, Paul Albert Besnard, R. P. Bonington, W. A. Bouguereau, Jean-charles Cazin, George Chambers, Charles Chaplin, Francois Clouet, John Constable, J. Singleton Copley, J. B. C. Corot, Sir Francis Cotes, C. F. Daubigny, Henri Daumier, Henry Dawson, A. M. De Neuville, J. B. Édouard Detaille, N. V. Diaz, Jules Dupre, Thomas Gainsborough, Walter Gay, Jean Baptiste Greuze, George Hitchcock, Hans Holbein, John Hoppner, Ludwig Knaus, D. Ridgeway Knight, John Lafarge, John, J L E Meissonier, T. Offermans, John Opie, Mainardo Pagani, Alberto Pasini, Franz Pourbus(the elder), Franz Pourbus (the younger), Sir Henry Raeburn, H. Van Ryn Rembrandt, and Sir Joshua Reynolds.

In 1905 another Sale of work in King’s collection featuring English and French portraits was held at the American Art Galleries on the afternoon of March 31, 1905 and at Mendelssohn Hall on the evening of March 31, 1905.

King was a member of the Union League, Racquet and Tennis, Metropolitan (NY and D.C.), and New York Yacht Clubs. He owned second homes on Newport and Jekyl Islands.
