historical notes Charles Kaufman Williams, II, is an archaeologist, heir to his family’s fortune from the mineral pigment industry, and ad art collector.

Williams's collection includes paintings, sculptures, watercolors, and drawings from the early decades of the twentieth century.

The collection includes work by, among others, Maurice B. Prendergast, Edward Hopper, Earl Horter, Emil Nolde, Preston Dickinson, Joseph Stella, Oscar Bluemner, Thomas Hart Benton, Elie Nadelman, John Storrs, Alberto Giacometti, Louise Nevelson, Charles Demuth, Georgia O'Keeffe, John Marin, Marsden Hartley, and Arthur Dove.

Williams has directed excavations at ancient Corinth for the American School of Classical Studies in Athens from 1966 to 1996, serves on the Board of Directors of the American School of Classical Studies, and is a member of the Philadelphia Museum’s overseers board.
