Although he was interested in the work of Vincent Van Gogh dating back to his schooldays in Chicago and there are four Van Goghs in his collection, Ellison collects mainly Japanese art. There are some 500 works in all. “In the Moment: Japanese Art From the Ellison Collection,” which was exhibited at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, featured over 60 works from Mr. Ellison's holdings, dating back more than 1000 years. Rarities included a wooden Buddhist sculpture from the 13th to 14th centuries depicting Prince Sh toku, a legendary figure from Japan's classical Asuka period, as a small child.
