historical notes Pierre Mattisse was an art dealer and the younger son of Henri Matisse (1869-1954).

Matisse both collected and exhibited paintings, sculpture, and drawings by, among others, Balthus, Chagall, Derain, Dubuffet, Giacometti, Magritte, Miró, Tanguy, pre-Colombian art and tribal art. Mattisse’s collection did include work by his father but he never exhibited any.

He was president of the Art Dealers Association of America from 1964 to 1966. Matisse became a naturalized American citizen in1942, and was made a chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters and later an officir of the Legion of Honor by the French Government.

Matisse was married three times; first, in 1929, Alexina Sattler, who married Marcel Duchamp after their divorce; his second wife was Patricia O'Connell Kane, she died in 1972, and in 1974 he married Maria-Gaetana von Spreti (1943–2001) who survived him.
