historical notes The Los Angeles physician Leslie M. Maitland, and his wife, Ruth, were collectors of Old Master and modern art, Chumash sculpture, and Southern California contemporary art. Their collection included work by Rembrandt van Rijn, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Albrecht Durer, Juan Miró, Constantin Brancusi, Giorgio de Chirico, Paul Klee, Odilon Redon, Max Ernst, Henri Rousseau, Pablo Picasso, Morris Graves, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, and Salvador Dalí. They loaned works from their collection to exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum in the 1930s and 1940s. In 1948, the Maitlands co-founded the short-lived Modern Institute of Art (1948-1950).
