He and his first wife, Barbara (née Biggar), were inspired by the collection of California impressionists that had been rediscovered in 1969 at the Pasadena Museum of Art, where Barbara was a docent. Ehrlich began to collect seriously in the mid-1970s. At one time counting more than 80 paintings, his collection includes Guy Rose, Roger Kuntz, Joseph Kleitsch, Alson Clark, Franz Bischoff, Thomas Hunt, Joseph Raphael, George Brandriff, Ejnar Hansen, Phil Dike and Granville Redmond, among others

In 1985, along with Mary Hendrickson and Jean Stern, Bob co-founded the Historical Collections Council (HCC), an organization for collectors of California art, for which he served as president three times.
