Joseph W. Bates was an art collector, merchant, a member of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia (1863-1886) and the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society of Philadelphia.
According to The Art Treasures of America, Bates owned works by A. Achenbach, H. J. Boddington, S. Bough, D. Dansaert, F. De Braekeleer, R. Gavin, F. P. Hasenclever, W. Hemsley, J. F. Herring, C. H bner, A. Jernberg, H. Jutsam, I. Leon Y Escosura, E. Moran, E. Nicol, W. Q. Orchardson, H. Ronner, A. Serrure, C. G. Stanfield, E. J. Verboeckhoven, Verboeckhoven and Roffiaen, F. Voltz, and R. S. Zimmerman.
